Ben Bergquam was with Ice agents during a raid on Sunday and yelled at protesters that they were ‘the enemy within’
Ben Bergquam, the rightwing internet personality, was with agents, filming and making content as well as getting into altercations with local residents along the way, according to a video the Guardian viewed on X. In the video, he appears to be in the car with Ice agents and nearby as they arrest people; later on he yells at a group of Chicagoans who are gathered to prevent Ice operations that they are “the enemy within”.In a 2024 video he falsely claimed that Hurricane Helene victims wouldn’t be helped out financially because the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema), which is a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), spent all its money housing migrants in Chicago.Usually based in Fresno, California, Bergquam has been traveling to the Illinois city since at least 2019, according to Block Club Chicago, when he falsely accused a local pastor of being part of a transnational group that guided migrant caravans from Central and South America. The Department of Homeland Security posted on X that the agency’s operations on Sunday and Monday in Chicago constituted what it called “Operation Midway Blitz”, with a focus on the predominantly Latino neighborhoods surrounding the Midway airport.

The Trump administration launched what it has dubbed "Operation Midway Blitz" in Chicago, drastically ramping up immigration operations and ICE raids. Here are the latest updates.
Several weeks after the Trump administration first signaled it would be drastically ramping up U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Chicago, the Department of Homeland Security launched what it dubbed "Operation Midway Blitz" on Monday.DHS claims the operation will "target the criminal illegal aliens who flocked to Chicago and Illinois," blaming the city and state's sanctuary laws that prohibit local and state law enforcement from cooperating with ICE agents. The department did not say how long the operation is expected to last. DHS claims the mission would be carried out to honor Katie Abraham, a Chicago woman killed in a drunk driving hit-and-run crash in Urbana, Illinois, about 130 miles south of Chicago, earlier this year.Immigrant rights advocates and Chicago activists have been protesting outside ICE facilities in the suburbs since last week, and more protests have been planned this week now that the enhanced enforcement operation is underway. Organizers are also working in the community to inform residents of their rights; the city of Chicago offers "Know Your Rights" guides in both English and Spanish.

For now, President Donald Trump’s decision to hold off National Guard troops in Chicago represents a political victory for Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker.
President Donald Trump said he could announce as early as Wednesday a National Guard deployment to a state and city that wants it, seemingly taking off the table for now his weeks-long threat to use military assets in Chicago to deter crime over the objections of Democratic leaders. For now, at least, Trump’s decision to hold off federalizing National Guard troops and sending them into Chicago represents a political victory for one of his most vociferous opponents, Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker. The two-term governor has maintained throughout a weeks-long back and forth between him and the president that Chicago did not face an emergency that warranted military deployment, that such a deployment was not wanted by the public and that such an act would be illegal.Pritzker was referring to a Saturday posting Trump made on his “Truth Social” media platform, showing military helicopters flying over Chicago’s lakefront skyline with the title “Chipocalypse Now,” a reference to the 1979 Vietnam War movie “Apocalypse Now.” Trump was dressed in U.S.
